The construction industry contributes greatly to the national economic development, but negative images such as 3D industry and poor construction still exist. A negative image of the construction industry can undermine sustainable growth by hindering the influx of talented manpower and reducing investment in the industry. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the competitiveness of the industry through continuous image improvement activities.
As a result of a survey on areas that need improvement in order to improve the image of the construction industry, 'poor construction', 'safety accidents/disasters', 'civil complaints', 'corruption/bribery', 'fixing', 'poor management', 'Environmental destruction', 'real estate speculation', 'morality', 'welfare', 'working hours', 'work safety', 'Work environment(3D Industry)' and 'employment structure(employment instability)' were selected.
Meanwhile, activities to improve the image of the construction industry are mainly focused on social contribution activities. However, the effect appears to be insignificant. It can be seen that there is no activity on the part that needs improvement, and it is limited to a one-time activity mainly targeting the vulnerable class.
Japan has been engaged in continuous activities for the past 30 years to improve the image of the construction industry. Recently, under the goal of “re-branding” in the construction industry, public and private governments have gathered together to set a common goal. In addition, various projects are being promoted to create a positive impact on the construction industry. Such image improvement activities can ultimately have an effect on solving problems such as the aging problem at the site and the absence of youth entry.
Japan's efforts to improve the image of the construction industry will be able to give implications to Korea. Instead of focusing on social contribution activities by individual organizations, plans should be systematically established through the formation of a public-private council. In other words, it is necessary to grasp the current status → set specific goals → establish policies for each field to achieve the goals → assign roles for each subject → periodic evaluation of business performance → continuous improvement of the business by supplementing problems'.
In addition, efforts to change the image of the industry are needed, like rebranding the construction industry in Japan. In particular, efforts should be made to improve the public's awareness of the construction industry so that the inflow of new manpower can be facilitated. These activities will ultimately be the basis for the sustainable growth of the industry.
