● This study presents the best practices to promote the domestic MMC(Modern Methods of Construction) market by analyzing the European MMC market trends and the strategies of key players.
● The European MMC market, which is the most developed globally, is expected to grow steadily.
- The size of the European MMC market is more than $50 billion in 2020 and is expected to exceed $80 billion in 2027.
- The UK government is implementing various policies to promote the use of MMC, and other European countries indirectly induce the use of MMC through policies such as raising energy efficiency standards for buildings.
● This study analyzes five European MMC players—Laing O’Rourke (UK), Legal & General Modular Homes (UK), Moelven Byggmodul AB (Norway), BoKlok (Sweden), and Kleusberg GmbH & Co. KG (German)—and presents four best practices as follows:
- ① policies and systems to induce companies to use MMC
- ② integration or specialization of the project delivery system
- ③ investments to enhance technological competitiveness
- ④ education system for nurturing technical human resources
● In order to promote the domestic MMC market, this study suggests as follows:
- Construction companies should make steady investments to develop technology for quality assurance of facilities using the MMC methods, increase production efficiency, and reduce costs. They could maximize the benefits of MMC by integration or specialization of the project delivery system.
- The role of the government is also critical to promoting MMC in the domestic construction industry. As a public owner, the government should provide a stable pipeline so that companies use MMC methods actively.
- In addition, policies such as tax benefits or loans to lead companies to invest and the current ordering system enhancements are required.
